Tailored Jewel (Malaysia) Review

I have purchased a loose diamond and I need to do the ring casing. I found out a young startup known as Tailored Jewel from Lowyat forum and decided to give it a shot.

At first, I got in touch with them via their Facebook page. Subsequently, we exchanged emails, discussing about the design and price, before meeting up. The person-in-charge of my case is Ethon. He is a tall and well-built fella. He clearly explained the details I need to know, including the reason why extra charges were needed for my custom design. He mentioned that extra effort was needed to come out with the 3D design make the mould, hence the extra cost. This was acceptable for me.

I did not engage him immediately as I need to research other options available in the market, but ultimately, I still come back to him because his rings were made in Hong Kong and he assured me that the quality is better. Hence, we met the second time and I passed him my diamond and signed some documents to acknowledge the deal.

The ring was completed within the same month, as promised. He delivered the ring to me at our agreed location and I take a look at the ring with my diamond set on it. Wow, it was amazing! I checked the diamond's authenticity by looking into the inscribed laser marking using the loupe provided by Ethon, and everything was in order.

Not long after that, I proposed to my girlfriend successfully and handed her the ring. However, she noticed that the 4-prongs were not symmetrical and she was sad about it. I checked closely again and found out that the 4-prongs were indeed not symmetrical. My girlfriend also mentioned that she did not feel that comfortable with the ring's knife edge design, which was what i wanted to make the ring look more beautiful. So, I messaged Ethon and told him about my issues with the ring. Ethon quickly apologized for the mistake and said he will fix it for me free-of-charge. I also asked him if it was possible to change the design to a design that my girlfriend felt comfortable with, and he had no problem with that. He traveled down to KL town 2-days later to collect the ring from me and my girlfriend. He even brought along the ring my girlfriend wanted with him for her to try on and apologized once more. His sincerity gave us confidence that things will be right this time, so we are both hoping for the best!

I will update the outcome here soon.

Update: 10 July 2016

So, met with Ethon to get the ring. This time, the diamond was mounted on a new design. The prongs were better than last time, but need minor adjustment, which won't be too hard. However, discovered other problems:

1. Some minor scratch on the side, which can be polished.

2. The design on the left side of the ring, did not match well with the right side of the ring. They should be mirror image of each other.

Ethon offered me 2 options:

1. Refund me 100%.

2. Give the company another chance to get things right.

I took option 2. Hopefully things will go well this time. He will go to Hong Kong personally to try to resolve the problems above. So, fingers crossed.

I will update the outcome here soon.

So Ethon text me today and told me that the ring is ready. The prongs are now nice and the size is perfect. The craftsmanship, however, is not that smooth, probably because the craftsman need to do some manual work to make both side looks identical. But then comes a major problem, the diamond is not properly mounted between the prongs. Take a look:

As you may see, the prong on the right is shorter than the prong on the left. This has caused the ring to slant towards the right. I thought something was strange when I first saw it, and then my fiance saw it too, it was indeed slanting. Oh well, so back to Ethon then.

I drop him a WhatsApp message midnight, telling him that I am unable to accept the setting and I will need to fix the diamond elsewhere. He replied me the next morning said he will honour his money-back guarantee and now we are pending to fix a date for the returning of the ring. Once again, he apologized for the disappointment, but I guess we shouldn't cry over spilled milk. He did his part and that's it. In his industry, there can be a lot of factors that can contribute to such incident, but as he is the middleman, I believe not all things are under his control. He has done what he can and I appreciate his effort. Even though the business did not go smoothly, the dealing with him was actually quite pleasant.

Pros:
Money-back guarantee.
Ethon is a gentleman and a nice person to deal with.
Flexible appointment time and place.
The white gold on the setting is actually pretty solid and not stingy. The gold looks bright.

Cons:
The craftsmanship need improvement (as far as the Cartier 1895 setting is concerned).

Conclusion:
To play safe, probably I should have settled with a Tiffany 4-prongs setting. It is a classic setting. And to be fair, not all shops can give a perfect Cartier 1895 setting. And for Tailored Jewel, it is a young company (incorporated 22 December 2015) and there is a lot of potential in it. As long as they improve the craftsmanship, I am sure I will be looking forward to deal with them again.

Update: 15 August 2016
So, I had done my photoshoot and I and Ethon had arranged to meet up on 11 August 2016. I returned him the ring and he refunded me in full with cash, according to what I have paid in the invoice. So, all is smooth, and I can say that I am impressed that his company can hold up to his promise of money-back guarantee. All I can say that in Malaysia, I will not expect such service. Maybe there are some other similar jewellery companies that can offer similar service, but I don't expect I will see many. So, well done Tailored Jewel!

Update: 24 August 2016 After Thoughts...
If I can redo all over again with Tailored Jewel, I will probably ask him to cast a new mold for the Cartier 1895 design. I don't mind paying the extra just to get things right. Tailored Jewel's 18K white gold is much solid compared to most that are in the market, and it looks shiny. If that gold, pair with a decent mold for the ring setting, together with better craftsmanship when mounting, I am sure things can be right this time. Honestly, I think the craftsman in Malaysia did a better job in mounting the diamond than the one in Hong Kong.
