WhiteFlash ACA Collection Series - The Occasional Value Buy! :D

While browsing through WhiteFlash site for some price comparison casually, I bumped into this piece:

0.322ct E VVS2 WhiteFlash ACA Collection Series Diamond

Priced at USD 851, which is equivalent to approximately RM 3592.27 based on MoneyMatch, this is definitely a value buy. Now, some may have asked before - Why the price is cheaper than even a smaller carat weight F VS1, which can be priced around USD 900. Well, based on my understanding, I can breakdown into a few possibilities (Please note that this is based on my own speculation, so take it with a pinch of salt):

1. The stone may contain GIA Faint Fluorescence. Yes, AGS takes both GIA None Fluorescence & GIA Faint Fluorescence as Neligible Fluorescence. Despite that, we can almost be certain that Faint Fluorescence does not bring any negative impact to the diamond. Of course, we can still go case-by-case basis, but as far as WhiteFlash ACA is concerned, it is certainly very safe, since they evaluate each stone individually and back their stones with top-notch money-back guarantee and upgrade policy, which is one of the best in the industry. In fact, I don't mind to buy Faint Fluorescence GIA stones at all if I want to maximize on value, as they are slightly cheaper,  Just that sometimes the word "Faint" may play some trick on our minds.

2. The price of the parcel of the stones. Yes, the price can be different from parcel to another, depending on quantity and market price at that time. Usually, the "discount" a vendor can get from supplier is depending on the quantity of stones or total carat the vendor buys.

3. The slight "green" underneath the diamond table, as observable in the ASET may make the price point lower due to "technical" reasons. But this doesn't mean this stone is not a performer. Those are actually pretty minor stuff that almost certainly cannot be distinguished by human eye.

4. Now, this is very much a speculation - The stone may originally be deemed as a lower colour / lower clarity or both at the supplier side, so the supplier selling price may be priced cheaper. However, when it reaches the grading lab, it gets a better grade, but since the price is already lower at first, it remains the same when it is being sell to the vendor. Usually the supplier/diamond cutter has their in-house grading professional, and this person will grade the diamond based on their own expertise. I have seen a particular supplier that grades the stone to be VS2 but comes back as VS1 from GIA. Again, I don't see this much of a problem because one grading apart is pretty normal in the industry. This is simply because the grades are human, and each human may vary a little even if they are a professional grader.

Again, in the US, some people will usually take the stone to independent appraisers to evaluate the stone, if the stone comes back somewhat with a lower colour or clarity, they can opt to return the stone, as simple as that. But for Malaysia, we usually don't do this sort of thing, so usually, for simplicity's sake, I will just take the paper value as what it is. But of course, if you really want to send the stone to GIA for evaluation, then jewellers like Tailored Jewel and Memory Jewellery can help you with that. If you don't prefer to send it to GIA for evaluation, then you can look for Shannon from The Gem Tribe to help you to appraise. My own preference is of course sending it to GIA lab to get a grading report because with that, the stone will have more "authority". With that, you will have a dual grading report stone. There is one guy that did it for his pair of quarter-million (USD!) diamond studs, which carry a pair of Crafted by Infinity stones!

Anyway, for practical reasons, at the end of the day, I will just take the WhiteFlash ACA mentioned above at paper value simply because AGS is a highly reputable lab and I have confidence in their grading. To add on, at RM 3592.27 for this stone, and RM 1499.00 (For this diamond size, I am pretty sure the price will be this from Memory Jewellery), for this lovely setting from Memory Jewellery, the final price will be RM 5091.27. It may be more expensive that what you can get locally from smaller jewellers, but you will definitely get a diamond with an absolute brilliant cut with great proportions and performance, along with a set of performance images to back it up. And don't forget that WhiteFlash has excellent return policy and upgrade policy that comes with each of their in-house stones.
