Diamonds are men's best friend

Ever since I delved into the realm of diamonds, I am totally in it. Well, almost. It is so fascinating to go around and ask around, do research online, and so on.  I wanted to get something that is worthy to become my engagement diamond for my beloved wife. As I get into it deeper, it is so fun to listen to salespeople bullshitting and trying to hard sell you something, the feeling of entering into a jewellery store for the first time is totally opposite, when many uncertainties crossed my mind, is totally opposite now.

In Malaysia, even if you enter a normal jewellery store, there will be a price mark-up. If you go to a shop with branded diamonds (not even luxury yet, like Tiffany or Cartier),  the mark-up can be quite daunting. The price can be RM 13,XXX for a F VS1 diamond, sitting on a 18-K white gold setting. A better piece can be bought at RM 8,000 more or less. Do we need after-sales service? What is the after-sales service available? Actually, it is just polishing and washing at the factory. And by the time you need one, it will be chargable even if you buy from that jewellery store. So, I guess it makes more sense to get it cheaper by a whopping RM 5,000, and then send to another jeweller to service, if the need arises after sometime. Of course, you will need to find one that let you examine your diamond laser inscription when getting it back.

Update: 12 September 2016
I can understand that the mark-up is because of the rental, salary, advertising, and so on, but then, if I can save more, I think I should. And since other excellent online jewellers can sell cheaper and still make profit out of it, I think it is fair for me to buy something at a cheaper price. Of course, if you are not comfortable buying online, then by all means, get it from a trustworthy brick-and-mortar store and also make sure that the price mark-up (if any) is reasonable. So, why do I say diamond's are men's best friend? Simple. Because I think only guys are willing to listen to all the details of the diamond inside out. For girls? Well, as far as my wife is concerned, the answer is "Just get one that is not too shabby." I guess other ladies out there, should be the same. At most, we could be talking about 4Cs and GIA certs but not anything more detail, like the ideal proportion of a diamond (or maybe I am wrong, but I am not being sexist). Also, a lot of girls still get taken away by Tiffany and Cartier that come with crazy prices. Wonder what is the rationale behind it. I guess it is either the "feel good" factor, or the turquoise little blue box really worth alot! Heh. Anyway, we all need some "feel good" factor sometimes, this one I agree. Who doesn't like luxury and branded goods? I admit I do. But when the money is that much on the table, more work needs to be done to get the one ring that gives the most bang for my bucks. (Actually, even if you are rich, it is advisable that you should put more rationale when buying anything too)

Also, buying engagement ring is the duty of the man, so he is the one that needs to learn up a lot and a lot... Of course, if the wife-to-be likes to join the learning session, it is great, but when the guy needs to make the proposal as a surprise, then, well, you have to become best friend with diamonds, or else, prepare to get ripped-off most likely. I honestly enjoyed my experience in helping a Lowyat forumer to choose his diamond, it is quite a bromance relationship (eww...). Hope he finally succeed in getting the one diamond that will tie the knot :)

P.S. Personally, I still think that the person that is  going to receive the diamond is the most important consideration factor. Diamond or whatsoever, is just a representation. Get what he/she likes, in a good way, and smart way, is really all that matters. Yes, be it a Tiffany, Cartier, Brian Gavin, WhiteFlash, and so on. For me, the thing I cherish is my hard work in doing all these, for her hand in our wedding. Keep things within my budget and save more for our future. Whenever I see her smile happily at the diamond I gave her, I know she likes it and she will cherish the representation it brings, as much as I do.
